Why We Chose Linen

When it came to selecting our next fabric collection, we wanted to choose something incredibly durable and intensely soft — which brought us to linen. European linen is a unique blend of fabric, and is made from flax, a plant from the Linaceae family.

Flax is grown in the coastal region of Western Europe, starting south of Normandy through the Netherlands and Belgium. Flax is the sole textile fibre that originated on the continent of Europe. You can't grow it anywhere else. It thrives in the rich soil and naturally damp, oceanic climate.

Additionally, fewer pesticides, energy, and irrigation are needed when growing European flax. It's more environmentally friendly than growing other fibres, such as cotton. Flax uses 1/5 of the fertilizers and pesticides that cotton requires.

Flax is also perfect for those who suffer from allergies, as it's naturally anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic. It's the best thing for you to lay on for multiple hours without worrying if it'll irritate your skin.

Linen is a fabric that tends to last decades if you take care of it the right way, and it just keeps getting softer and cozier over time.

How Linen is Made

When it comes to making linen, turning the flax plant into linen is a lengthy and complicated process. The steps to prepare the flax are:

  • Pull up the plant by its roots and dry
  • Remove the seeds in a process called rippling
  • Let the dry flax straw separate the fibres from the plant stalk

Once the flax is prepared, it is then spun into yarn — a similar process to making wool fabric.

The flax threads are then weaved together to make the linen fabric. Finally, manufacturers use a frame or loom to interlace the threads.

Benefits and Features

There are countless benefits to the simple yet elegant fabric. In addition to being more sustainable than other fabrics, it's quite breathable. It’s also incredibly long-lasting and is the perfect blend of breezy and cooling.

Highly Absorbent

Linen fibres are hollow, so they allow more airflow than other fabrics used for bed linens. Additionally, linen is highly absorbent and can absorb up to 20% of its dry weight with moisture without feeling damp.

Linen is perfect for those hot summer nights. You won't spend the night lying on damp sheets if you start to sweat — and hot sleepers tend to love the cooling effects that linen sheets have on their dreams.

Durable

Linen is one of the strongest natural fibres in the world, making it ideal for building a cozy, long-lasting nest. It’s far more durable than cotton, and even gets stronger and softer the more times you wash it.

Linen has been used as currency, illustrating how valuable it’s been throughout history. Just further proof that investing in a set of high-quality linen bed sheets is well worth it. They will last you for years to come.

Hypoallergenic

Linen sheets and other bedding are known to be naturally hypoallergenic, and they’re great for allergy sufferers and those with sensitive skin. Unlike some other fabrics, you can comfortably use linen sheets without them irritating your skin or causing rashes.
